Sharepoint uploading to the wrong folder

A user is reporting a strange issue. When uploading files to a SharePoint folder via drag and drop in their browser, the files sometimes upload to a different folder instead. For instance, despite dragging the documents into the folder "M-sheets", they are instead uploaded to "A-DWGs". I'm attaching an image showing the issue sent to me by the affected user. This is not the first time they have run into this issue, but I cant seem to replicate it on another computer. If it matters, the folder that the files are actually being uploaded to is a sub-folder of the same folder that M-Sheets" is a sub-folder of.

Understood. Thank you. I have already been advising everyone in my company to use the Upload > Files button.

Please note that "drag and drop" is the industry standard for cloud document storage. Currently, SharePoint Online is not meeting this industry standard.

    Dear M1Marin,

    Thanks for your updates.

I understand that the inconvenience the issue caused in your environments. We have done a test and it seems that we can’t reproduce the issue in our environment. May I know if the issue happen in the folders in a specific library in a specific site in your tenant environment? If yes, I’d like you to copy the affected folder to another library in the affected site or another site with the Copy to option to see if the issue goes away in another library. If yes, I suggest you remove the original folder in the affected library and use the newly copied folder in the new library as a solution.

@Tomkell, Could you also confirm the information above?

    Thanks for your effort.

    Cliff

    Hi Cliff,

Yes, this does only seem to happen in 1 library. However, it is affecting multiple folders within that library, so moving or recreating the folder is not going to make any difference. Sure enough, I could recreate the entire library, but we have roughly 250 people using the library so it's just going to cause more problems for us.

This never used to happen until recently, and given that other people are experiencing the issue as well, it sounds like something was changed which inadvertently introduced this issue.

Maybe all of us in this forum have their tenants hosted on the same server?

    Kind regards,

    Tom

    Hello everyone,

just to chime in - I've encountered the same phenomenon on one of our clients tenants as well.

What I've noticed, when navigating from the top-level of a library into a folder, and then immediately upload via drag&drop - the item is 'misplaced' into the top-level. Giving my browser a few seconds to catch up after navigating into the folder seems to set the drag&drop destination correctly.

    Hope this helps a bit.

    Best regards,

    -Philipp

    @Cliff

The problem manifests in different folders throughtout the document library in one site. We only use this one library and this one site. Sorry, but your suggested solution is unworkable and places too much burden on our users. This issue needs to be reported as a bug to the Sharepoint Online product team.

Do you have the ability to report a bug to the product team?
