Sharepoint uploading to the wrong folder

A user is reporting a strange issue. When uploading files to a SharePoint folder via drag and drop in their browser, the files sometimes upload to a different folder instead. For instance, despite dragging the documents into the folder "M-sheets", they are instead uploaded to "A-DWGs". I'm attaching an image showing the issue sent to me by the affected user. This is not the first time they have run into this issue, but I cant seem to replicate it on another computer. If it matters, the folder that the files are actually being uploaded to is a sub-folder of the same folder that M-Sheets" is a sub-folder of.

    Hi All,

Thanks for your updates. Based on your descriptions, now we know that the issue only affects a specific library with multiple folders. The issue is that, in a specific library, draging and droping file to a folder will finally upload the file to a folder we accessed previously.

However, there’s still something we need to confirm, just like Sheen mentioned, we have to narrow down the issue with more detailed information before reporting to the related resource. So, can you help us check:

    1.       Whether clicking the upload button will cause the same issue as draging and droping file?

    2.       If you are in modern user experience or classic experience? Per my experience, some issues may only affects modern experience, if you are in modern UI, please try to click the “Return to classic SharePoint” button at the left bottom of the page and see whether the issue can be reproduced in classic experience. If not, at least we find a workaround before the final fix.

In the meantime, as we failed to reproduce the issue by our side, getting a log from your side may help the related team investigate further. If that is convenient for you, we will appreciate your several minutes to help us get a log. I will send a private message to each of you for the detailed steps. Please access it via this link. You can also provide us the affected tenant information and affected library site URL as well in the private message together.

    Best Regards,

    Rena

    Hi Rena,

    1.       Whether clicking the upload button will cause the same issue as dragging and dropping file?

The upload button works fine and does not experience this issue. This is the workaround that I have given to our staff.

    2.    If you are in modern user experience or classic experience?

This is using the modern experience. I tested using the classic experience, but that worked fine.

I have sent a private message with the Fiddler logs.

For the benefit of the other people in this thread, please note that the version of Fiddler (v4.6) linked in the private message doesn't work as it causes SSL errors. I had to download the latest version of Fiddler (v5) from their website and use that instead.

    Kind regards,

    Tom

@Tom, thanks for providing us the information and the log in the private message. Your effort is highly appreciated.

    Best Regards,

    Hi All,

I have involved the related resources and I’m notified that the issue may happen when the character of the affected file path exceeds the SharePoint Online’s limitation.

For our further investigation, could you provide the affected file’s full path in your environments in the private message?

    Best Regards,

    Cliff
