Accidental subscription

I am a student at Riga Stradins University (RSU). My university gives me free Microsoft services(Office 365, OneDrive, etc.). So I don't need my personal paid subscription at all – I never use it. Back in October, I cancelled my personal paid subscription. On my iPhone, it showed as "Cancelled". I was 100% sure that no more money would be taken from my card. But today I checked my bank account and saw that €10 has been taken every month from November until now. That's several months of payments for something I don't even use. I thought it was cancelled. My Apple device showed it as cancelled. But somehow Microsoft kept charging me.

Please refund all the money from November until today.

Thank you!

Hello, good day and thanks for your question. Sorry to know about this. If there is no other order or subscription that is present on your account this means that the payment method or the card that you are using got caught somewhere from the last time that you have used it and this has caused an unauthorized charge and in this case it is best to reach out to the bank to block and replace your card to avoid additional or future unwanted charge/s. It is also a good measure to temporarily lock it from the bank's website or the bank's mobile app as soon as possible and coordinate or request for a refund from the bank or from Apple for the fraudulent charge that happened.

Refunds and subscription billing cannot be handled directly here, but the situation can be addressed using Microsoft’s refund and billing tools.

    1. First, confirm where the subscription was purchased:
      • If it was purchased through the Apple App Store on the iPhone, cancellation and refunds must be handled by Apple, not Microsoft. Use Apple’s refund process: request a refund from Apple support.
      • If it was purchased directly from Microsoft, manage it via the Microsoft account.
    2. If the subscription was purchased from Microsoft:
      1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the same personal Microsoft account that is being charged.
      2. Under Services & subscriptions, locate the personal Microsoft 365 (or other) subscription.
      3. Select Manage.
        • If Turn on recurring billing is shown instead of Manage, the subscription is already set to expire and will not charge again.
      4. On the next page, select Cancel (or Upgrade or Cancel) and follow the on‑screen steps to complete cancellation.
      5. After cancellation, check refund eligibility using Microsoft’s refund guidance: How to get a refund on a Microsoft subscription.
    3. If the subscription was purchased via Apple or another third party:
      • Microsoft cannot cancel or refund these charges. Contact the store directly:
        • For Apple App Store purchases, request a refund from Apple support.
    4. If charges are not recognized or appear incorrect:
      • Review order history and payment options to investigate charges and other accounts that may be using the same card: use the Manage your payments / Payment options tools described in the refund and “charged twice” articles.
    5. If self‑service steps do not resolve it:
      • Contact Microsoft Support via the official support site and choose the billing/subscription category so an agent can review eligibility for refunds based on the account and region.

For future use, the university‑provided Microsoft 365 account can be used instead of the personal subscription once the personal subscription is cancelled.
