I have a subscription to Microsoft 365, which I have been paying monthly. I made my payment for April and my next renewal date was to be May 9, 2026.

I received a message on April 24 that my subscription had been cancelled when I was using Microsoft Word. I went ahead and renewed by subscription for another year.

I was wondering why my subscription was cancelled on April 24 when my renewal date was to be May 9?

The most likely cause is a billing or payment issue that caused the subscription to move into an expired or suspended state before the displayed renewal date. When there is a problem with Microsoft 365 subscription payment (for example, a declined or failed charge), Office apps can show messages such as “Renew your subscription,” “Subscription canceled,” or “ACCOUNT NOTICE. We've run into a problem with your Microsoft 365 subscription and need your help to fix it,” and may treat the subscription as canceled even if the original renewal date is in the future.

Key points from the documented behavior:

    1. If payment fails or there is another billing problem, the subscription can become expired or suspended before the previously shown renewal date, which then triggers cancellation/renewal notices in Word or other Office apps.
    2. After renewing, it may still be necessary to:
      • Verify renewal status and dates online on the Microsoft account Subscriptions or Payment & billing pages to confirm the subscription is now active.
      • Close and reopen Office apps and sign in again with the Microsoft account associated with the subscription so the apps pick up the updated license.
    3. If the expiration or renewal dates shown online still do not look correct, or if there are questions about why the subscription was treated as canceled on a specific date, the next step is to contact Microsoft Support so billing and account details can be reviewed.

Because the exact account and billing history is not visible here, only Microsoft Support can confirm the specific reason for the April 24 cancellation on that subscription.
