I recently built a new PC and wish to activate windows on the new one. My activation license said it was linked to my Microsoft account but when I've went to activate it in the troubleshoot it does not show.

    Hello,

How did you obtain your license initially?

Did it come with the old device preinstalled, or did you purchase it?

If you purchased it, did you purchase from Microsoft, or from third party?

Is it originally a Win7/8 key?

Do you still have access to the old computer?

For a new or significantly changed PC, Windows may not automatically find the old license, even if it was linked to a Microsoft account. Use these steps and options:

    1. Confirm Windows 10 is not activated and that the troubleshooter is available:
      • Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
      • If it shows Windows isn’t activated, select Troubleshoot.
    2. Use the Activation troubleshooter with the “hardware change” path:
      • In Settings > Update & Security > Activation, select Troubleshoot.
      • When it shows Windows can’t be activated on your device, choose I changed hardware on this device recently, then Next.
      • Sign in with the same Microsoft account that previously showed “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.”
      • From the list of devices linked to that account, select the checkbox for This is the device I’m using right now, then choose Activate.
      • If the current PC does not appear, verify the same Microsoft account is being used that was associated with the original digital license.
    3. If error 0x803F7001 appears:
      • This means Windows cannot find a valid license for this hardware.
      • If there is a Windows 10 product key used on the old PC, enter it via Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key.
      • If there is no key and the license was a digital one, use the troubleshooter’s exception path:
        • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Troubleshoot.
        • If the troubleshooter cannot fix it automatically, a link to reactivate after a hardware change should appear; follow that path.
    4. If the device or license still does not show:
      • If Windows 10 was preinstalled (OEM) on the old PC, a new license is required after a major hardware change such as a new motherboard.
      • If the license was a full Retail license and the troubleshooter cannot locate it or the device list is empty, direct Microsoft support intervention may be required to re-activate, as seen in similar cases where support reactivated the license manually.
    5. If no transferable license is available:
      • Purchase a new Windows 10 digital license by going to Settings > Update & Security > Activation and selecting Go to Microsoft Store, then follow the prompts.

Linking the Microsoft account to the Windows 10 license on the device is essential before hardware changes; once properly linked, the Activation troubleshooter is the supported way to move activation after building a new PC.
