The web version does not have this problem. If you are using Chrome, you can make the web version open sort of like a native application. When your browser is on the Teams web-app, go to the Chrome menu, More Tools, Create Shortcut - be sure to check the "open as window" option. You can then pin the open window to your taskbar and open the web version like a native application. Not ideal.. but at least then you can view images in Teams.. SMH.
Teams chat not displaying images properly
I just realized this problem seems to be happening to everyone. If you are in a chat group and someone shares an image, most times when you click on it to see the larger version it will not load, but show a blank screen instead. You have to leave the chat group and re-enter it multiple times in order to get the image to display properly. This did not used to be a problem. Maybe two months ago, this always seemed to work correctly - you click on an image and it shows the enlarged image. But now it typically just shows a blank screen.

2022-01-18T18:07:04.427+00:00 I am able to open an image once, before I have to totally quit out of teams. After reopening Teams, I can open the image again. The only workaround I have found is to right click the image and "Open in Browser"

2022-01-19T10:47:04+00:00 I might have a solution piggy backing off someone else you posted. I've had this issue since day 1 of Teams' new platform changes a couple years back.
Kudos to @PAI Kun for the thought of trying it in a pop-up window. My issue though is that I use meetings via plug-ins in Outlook to organize many different meeting based chats that don't have the option.
I eventually tried re-sizing (not full screen) my app to almost full screen (like a mm from the edges) and now my images show each time without cache flushing. This makes me lean to it being a resolution issue for how the app natively displays the image. Maybe M$ did not contemplate this when designing the resizing parameters of the app (regardless of OS).
