Microsoft eCDN onboarding checklist

Compatibility & integration

This checklist has been created to help streamline Microsoft eCDN integrations into Customer production workflows.

Task Description
Access the Admin Console After you’ve purchased a license, ensure you have access to https://aka.ms/ecdn/admin
Review Technical Documentation Technical Overview, Security Overview, Network Requirements, Analytics Overview, Subnet Mapping UI Overview, and more
Enable Microsoft eCDN Enable Microsoft eCDN tenant-wide. Make sure you're configuring Microsoft eCDN for the production tenant.

Network configuration

Task  Description
Microsoft eCDN Connectivity  Review the Networking Requirements documentation for our list of hostnames, domains, and ports to be allowed. Then, validate Microsoft eCDN’s service is accessible for all users.
Local IP Discovery   We can automatically obtain end-users’ local IPs for viewers who join an event with the Teams client. However, browser users need to disable mDNS for Microsoft eCDN domains.
VPN Configuration  It's suboptimal for VPN users to participate in peering. Disable peering for VPN users. For more, see Subnet Mapping UI overview
Cross-site network limitations  To prevent cross-site peering and maximize offload performance, upload your subnets CSV to the Subnet Mapping UI. Refer to the overview doc for instructions.
Subnet grouping  Not only does subnet mapping help maximize peering efficiency (offload), it also gives you per-site analytics.

Testing & optimization

  1. Silent Test: Simulate live event traffic and assess your network. See the Silent Testing how-to for instructions.

  2. Live event testing. See this helpful video how-to for instructions on how to create a Teams Live event.

Note

In lieu of Teams Live Event, as it's being deprecated, please use Town Hall live events for testing.

Be aware of the following notes.

  • A Teams Meeting doesn't count as a "live event" so it doesn't leverage Microsoft eCDN.

  • Only attendees benefit from Microsoft eCDN's peer-to-peer network. Organizers, Producers, and Presenters don't interact with the solution.

  • Viewers must be authenticated in your tenant. Unauthenticated, or anonymous viewers are prevented from using Microsoft eCDN.

First test settings and deliverables

  1. Create org-wide live event.

  2. Share attendee link with 20 in-office users.

    • All 20 users to join via Teams desktop application
  3. Document the following information.

    • Peering efficiency/offload rate (aim for min. 30%)
    • Rebuffering rate (aim for below 1%)
    • Subnets are displayed (if you've uploaded)
    • 20 total devices to be displayed in analytics dashboard
    • Under "End-user application," Teams Desktop to make up bar graph

Second test settings and deliverables

  1. Create org-wide live event.

  2. Share attendee link with 20 in-office users.

    • 10 users to join from Teams desktop app
    • 10 users to join from browser
  3. Document the following information.

    • Peering efficiency/offload rate (aim for min. 30%)
    • Rebuffering rate (aim for below 1%)
    • Subnets are displayed (if you've uploaded)
    • 20 total devices to be displayed in analytics dashboard
    • Under "End-user application," Teams Desktop and Microsoft Edge to make up bar graphs
