Select a model for an agent (preview)

[This article is prerelease documentation and is subject to change.]

The model your agent uses affects its reasoning capabilities, response quality, and performance. You can select and change your agent's model from the Build tab in the components panel.

Note

This article reflects the new agent experience in Microsoft Copilot Studio, which is currently available as a production-ready preview. Learn about the two experiences in Classic vs. new agent experience.

  • Production-ready previews are subject to supplemental terms of use.
  • Some capabilities available in the classic experience aren't yet available in the new experience.
  • Agents created in the new experience can't be converted to the classic experience.

About model selection

The new agent experience supports multiple AI models with different capabilities and performance characteristics. The model you choose affects:

  • Reasoning depth: More capable models can handle complex, multi-step reasoning tasks.
  • Response quality: Different models produce varying levels of nuance and accuracy.
  • Speed: Some models respond faster but may be less capable for complex tasks.

Limitations of experimental and preview models

You can explore and test experimental and preview models, but don't use them for production:

  • They might show variability in performance, response quality, latency, or message consumption, and might time out or be unavailable.

  • If you publish an agent with an experimental or preview model, and users use the agent, that use is billed at the established rates.

Experimental and preview models are subject to preview terms. Microsoft makes these models available before an official release so that you can get early access and provide feedback. If you're building a production-ready agent, see Copilot Studio overview.

Change your agent's model

  1. Open your agent in Copilot Studio.

  2. Select the Build tab.

  3. In the components panel, select the Model list.

  4. Select the model you want.

  5. Select Save to apply the change.

Admin controls for AI model selection

Administrators can allow or block makers from adding preview and experimental AI models to agents by using the following settings:

  • Administrators can choose to allow or block preview and experimental models in an environment. To use these models, the Preview and experimental AI models setting must be turned on for your environment.

  • Data processed within a preview or experimental model might be processed and stored outside of your organization's geographical boundaries. To make experimental models available, your environment must have the Move data across regions setting turned on. The tenant administrator manages this environment-level setting in the Power Platform admin center.

Admin controls and requirements for external models

Admins control whether makers can add external models to agents. To grant access to external models, admins must complete the following actions:

Preview models and external models are two different sets that can overlap but aren't the same, and their settings are separate. For example:

  • Admins can block external models but allow preview or experimental models. In this case, makers can't use external models but can use preview, experimental, and generally available internal models.

  • Admins can block preview or experimental models but allow external models. In this case, makers can't use any preview or experimental models, but can use any generally available external and internal models.
