Microsoft IQ unlocks knowledge and actions from Microsoft 365 apps for your agent. It gives your agent access to organizational data such as emails, calendar events, files, Teams messages, and people information—enabling it to answer questions and take actions using the context of your organization.
Note
This article reflects the new agent experience in Microsoft Copilot Studio, which is currently available as a production-ready preview. Learn about the two experiences in Classic vs. new agent experience.
- Production-ready previews are subject to supplemental terms of use.
- Some capabilities available in the classic experience aren't yet available in the new experience.
- Agents created in the new experience can't be converted to the classic experience.
What is Microsoft IQ?
Microsoft IQ is a context layer that connects your agent to organizational data through specialized sources. Unlike standard knowledge sources where you point the agent at specific documents, Microsoft IQ provides dynamic access to organizational data that flows based on the user's context and permissions.
Microsoft IQ includes the following sources:
- Work IQ: Connects the agent to your organization's emails, chats, files, and activity to deliver more relevant work context. Work IQ is powered by the Agent 365 MCP gateway, which routes all Microsoft 365 data access through a single M365Copilot server.
- Fabric IQ: Connects the agent to business data and analytics in Microsoft Fabric to generate insights and support data-driven decisions.
- Foundry IQ (preview): Connects the agent to enterprise knowledge bases indexed by Azure AI Search, allowing it to retrieve and reason over content stored in Azure AI Foundry knowledge sources.
Why use Microsoft IQ?
Without Microsoft IQ, your agent can only access content you explicitly add as knowledge sources. With Microsoft IQ, your agent can:
- Answer questions about recent emails, upcoming meetings, and Teams conversations
- Look up people information and organizational structure
- Search across files stored in OneDrive and SharePoint
- Take actions like drafting emails or creating documents
- Leverage Microsoft 365 Copilot search for broad organizational queries
How Microsoft IQ works
- Microsoft IQ organizes its sources into three categories: Work IQ, Fabric IQ, and Foundry IQ.
- Work IQ uses the Agent 365 MCP gateway, which provides access to Microsoft 365 data through a single M365Copilot server.
- When you turn on a Microsoft IQ source, your agent can both read data from that service (knowledge) and perform actions in it (tools).
- The agent's orchestration runtime determines which Microsoft IQ sources to query based on the user's question and the available data.
- All access respects the user's existing permissions. Your agent can only access data the user is authorized to see.
