Release notes for Microsoft Teams admin features

These release notes provide information about new admin features for Microsoft Teams and Teams Admin Center.

November 28, 2024

  • Microsoft Teams: Voice and face profile data export controls: This new feature provides controls for data export for users. To ensure security and protection of user privacy, only individuals can export their own voice and face profile data, limiting the risk of download or sharing by tenant administrators.

  • Easily recall content around any person: Users can now easily recall content around any person they work closely with, by narrowing down search results to a relevant person while typing search terms. With introduction of person-pilling, clearly share person intent while formulating search query, see relevant content suggestions around the person in suggestions box, and further extend this search on search results page.

  • Sensitivity label support for town hall and webinars: This feature will now allow organizers to set sensitivity labels for town halls and webinars.

  • Microsoft Teams: Speed dial customization on line keys for nontouch phones: This feature lets users quickly access frequently dialed contacts and numbers with the ability to set up custom contacts and speed dial on the line key buttons and sidecars for nontouch phone devices certified for Microsoft Teams. This feature enables one-touch dialing capabilities and easy management of contact lists on line keys and sidecars.

  • Deploy frontline teams with flexible membership: Using our Deploy Teams at Scale tool on the Teams Admin Center, you'll be able to deploy location-based frontline teams that are backed by dynamic rules. Also, frontline managers will be able to add/remove members to their teams as necessary.

  • Event Chat for town halls: With this new update, everyone in a town hall will be able to chat using Event Chat.

  • Refreshed view of your teams and channels: A new 'your teams and channels' view provides a centralized hub experience, where you can see all your teams and navigate to their channels. This refreshed view streamlines your workflows, enabling you to quickly access and manage your teams and channels.

  • Microsoft Teams: Room audio auto-detect and preselect in BYOD meeting rooms: When users connect their laptop to a room's shared peripheral through USB, Teams automatically detects the room's audio and recommends connecting on the prejoin screen, streamlining the bring your own device (BYOD) meeting room experience. For room devices (for example, displays, audio devices) recognized as shared and on Microsoft's known BYOD devices list, users will automatically transition to the room's audio upon connection.

  • Microsoft Teams: Proximity join via ultrasound: Proximity join using ultrasound enables users to accurately identify and add specific Teams room they are in, to their meeting. Their device detects ultrasonic signals emitted in the physical Teams room, providing a more precise list of nearby rooms on the prejoin screen.

  • User onboarding to teams: The updated teams and channels onboarding flow will let users opt into channels of their interest while joining a team and have a lightweight teams and channels list experience. Users can choose to show/hide channels from a complete list of channels. When added to a new team, users can see which channels the team owner recommended, and select to show only the channels that are relevant to them. With the onboarding flow, "show for members" will change to "recommend to users," which will result in the channel no longer being shown in the members' teams and channels list, but will render the channel a "recommended one" for users to opt into by enabling its display on the onboarding page.

  • Ability for external presenters to join on Android and iOS Teams: This enhancement will allow presenters who were invited using the External Presenter feature to join via their Android and iOS Teams clients.

  • Microsoft Teams: Teams admins in education will be able to create and publish custom team templates: Education IT admins can now create team templates from Microsoft Teams Admin Center. Admins can use templates to easily deploy consistent teams across the organization. With templates, users can quickly create rich collaboration spaces with predefined settings, channels, and apps.

  • Reactions in Town halls (Premium): Currently in a town hall, attendees and others in the event are unable to send reactions or see those reactions that are sent. With this new update, anyone in the town hall can send a reaction and see the sent reactions as a stream of reactions on their screen.

  • New VDI solution for Teams for Azure Virtual Desktops, Windows 365, and Citrix VDI environments: New VDI solution for Teams is a rearchitecture of the current WebRTC-based optimization solution for the new Microsoft Teams in virtual desktop environments. This feature introduces a new media engine that is decoupled from the VDI Clients (Remote Desktop client, Citrix Workspace app, or Horizon client) and VDI Agents (Remote Desktop agent, Citrix VDA, or Horizon agent). The new media engine is based on the native media engine used in the Microsoft Teams Windows Desktop client. New VDI solution for Teams will be supported first on Windows endpoints only. Mac and Linux will be added later.

  • Lightweight People app on Teams Phone devices: This light People app provides a simplified and faster experience to help users manage contacts easily on Teams Phone devices.

  • Custom emojis and reactions: This feature lets users create their own expressive content in Teams using custom emojis and reactions.

  • Have better control over notifications sound: You can choose from an extended list of sounds for notifications. You can choose if some or all notifications should produce sound or if notifications should produce sound when you're busy or in a meeting.

  • Teams devices: Cancel scheduled device operations through Teams Admin Center: If a device operation is no longer required, admins will be able to cancel scheduled device operations, like software update and device restart through Teams Admin Center.

  • Microsoft Teams: Bookable desks: With the bookable desks feature in Teams, users can reserve desks upon arrival by plugging in to desk peripherals without a reservation. IT admins can discover bookable desks in shared spaces and add them to inventory in the Microsoft Teams Rooms Pro Management portal. IT admins can also get insightful utilization data for bookable desks via the Pro Management portal for proactive management and planning.

  • New and refreshed 3P app purchase experience in Teams and Teams Admin Center: This feature provides a new and refreshed purchase experience in Teams look and feel for Teams third party application in both Teams store and Teams Admin Center. This feature will slowly roll out, first to customers with a commerce billing account then to customers without a commerce billing account.

  • Teams meeting recordings will be saved to meeting organizers OneDrive for Business: This change will ensure that Teams meeting recordings are saved to meeting organizers OneDrive for Business (OdB) instead of recording initiator's OdB. This would lead to improved compliance for recordings as meeting organizer can then manage access permissions and recording file management.

  • Meet now in Teams group chat: With meet now in group chat, user would be able to instantly discuss articles with relevant people without disrupting other users in the chat.

  • Closed captioning support in Teams Walkie Talkie: This feature allows users to view captions on the Walkie Talkie home screen for transmissions being received.

  • Block download and access level improvement of OneDrive transcript file: Teams now supports IT admins to block the download of OneDrive transcript file for any users within the tenant. By default, only the owners can download or delete OneDrive transcript file while participants of the meeting can still view transcript in Teams app or Stream. In addition, owner of OneDrive transcript file will be able to configure who are blocked from downloading, who can view or edit on Stream.

  • Redirect an incoming call to voicemail without having to accept or reject the call: This feature allows users to redirect incoming calls directly to voicemail from incoming call toast.

  • Manual ingestion by teachers to update parent data inside Parent app: This feature allows teachers to add and edit existing parent data inside the Parent app. This request to update parent information can be directly made by teachers inside the Parent app. Once the request is raised, it needs an admin approval before updating the parent information in the app.

  • Prevent user from screen sharing in externally hosted meetings: If a user attends a meeting hosted by an external tenant, the IT admin for the user attending the externally hosted meeting can decide if this user is enabled to share their screen or not. If this setting is disabled, the user can't share their screen in an externally hosted meeting.

  • Enabling call forwarding directly from phone device home screen through Teams Admin Center: Users can enable call forwarding directly from phone device home screen, including common area phones. Admins can control display of call forwarding on phone device home screen through Teams Admin Center.

  • Advanced calling and contact management support on non-touch phones: On nontouch phones, users can use advanced calling features such as park/unpark calls, busy on busy, auto restart, and manage contacts and contact groups.

  • Microsoft Teams: Meeting ID and passcode to join on Teams Rooms on Windows: IT admins can configure and require a meeting ID and passcode to join a meeting on Teams Rooms on Windows to ensure higher levels of security and privacy. This feature is available for Teams Rooms Pro customers.

  • Teams Connect chat enhancements: This feature will make it easier to search guests by name and establish 1:1 or group chats using their phone numbers. It will also make it easier to create a company curated profile that includes information like location, job role, business unit, and even assign an organization manager for external partners.

  • Track usage of your frontline teams and apps in the Teams Admin Center.: Track usage across all your frontline teams deployed via DTAS (Deploy Teams at Scale) and frontline apps like Shifts, Tasks, Walkie Talkie in the Teams Admin Center.

  • Microsoft Teams: New Teams is now part of Teams Rooms on Windows: With the new Teams app now being a part of Teams Rooms on Windows, all Teams Rooms devices can utilize available resources to optimize room experience and render intelligent audio and video reliably.

  • Microsoft Teams: Single desktop app for all user types: Microsoft Teams on Windows and Mac will support every type of Teams account (work, school, or personal) in a single desktop application.

  • Voice isolation: With this feature, you can enjoy clear and uninterrupted calls or meetings, no matter where you are. This feature uses AI to filter out all background noise, including other people's voices. By using your voice profile, this advance noise suppression capability ensures only the user’s voice is transmitted. Whether you are in a busy office, a noisy cafe, or a crowded airport, you can communicate with confidence and clarity. This feature is powered by our advanced deep learning, speech services, and audio processing technology, and it shows our dedication to solving user problems with AI and enhancing audio quality and experience.

  • Multi-instance app customization support for Teams apps: If you're an IT admin, this feature will help you gain more control. You can make your supportive Teams apps fit your company brand and make them more useful for your employees. IT admins can create and manage multiple customized app instances, boosting branding, awareness, and user engagement. By overcoming single-instance limitations, this feature drives adaptability for diverse business needs.

  • Microsoft Teams: Organizers can select languages for translation in a town hall: This feature lets town hall organizers to select caption languages that are available to the attendees for translation. Currently, the languages are preset for attendees to pick from. But, this feature lets organizers select from six languages (ten languages for Premium).

  • Simplified compose experience: With this release, the message compose experience becomes simpler, more scalable, and clearer to use. Everything has a consistent place to be found and aligns with modern compose experiences that exist in many other apps. This experience will be available in both classic and new Teams.

  • Microsoft Teams device store: With Teams device store inside Microsoft Teams, customers can easily discover and purchase certified Teams devices for personal or shared use cases, such as headsets, web cameras, desk phones, Teams Rooms and more. The store features a wide array of Teams certified audio and video devices to accommodate any space including home, office, or during transit. Explore devices in categories, use search or filters to find desired device, and purchase all through the familiar Microsoft Teams interface. This release is limited to customers in US and Canada, and with user licenses less than or equal to three hundred.

  • Reduced presenter role permissions: This feature introduces a toggle in the Teams Admin Center to reduce presenter role permissions in untrusted environments, such as EDU, where students assigned as presenters could remove other students from the meeting. The reduced presenter permissions are only reserved for organizers and coorganizers.

  • Hide general channel: Similar to other channels, now you'll be able to hide general channels from your teams and have a cleaner left rail.

  • Simplified team and channel create: This feature lets you create channels from the teams and channels list. This new experience will promote creation of channels from the + button, in addition to team context menu and manage team> channels page. Users will be able to host channels by selecting the appropriate team. This experience will only be available in the new Teams app.

  • Simplified team create: You can now create teams with a shorter and simpler approach! We made it a simpler default experience for users to create teams from scratch, with 80% of users utilizing “create teams from scratch” option. Users will still be able to use the other options of creating team from templates and groups as a secondary view. This experience will only be available in the new Teams app.

  • 3P eCDN support for premium town halls: This flag enables the admins to allow organizers with teams premium license to turn off the usage of Microsoft eCDN and let them use the configured 3P eCDNs for their town halls.

  • Duplicate webinar or town hall: Creating events from scratch takes time. Now, organizers can use an already created webinar or town hall to jump start scheduling of another event.

  • Watermark support for recording playback (Premium): Recording can now be enabled for watermarked meetings. An email ID is displayed as the watermark during the meeting recording playback. Once a meeting has concluded, users can access the recorded content on both web and mobile platforms to watch the recording with watermarking.

  • Branded meetings: Join Launcher Screen with brand image and logo support (Premium): The Teams Join Launcher web page will now support the brand logo and brand image upload capability to a custom meeting theme as part of branded meetings.

  • Ability to join Teams for work meetings with Teams for Live client and identity (and vice versa): After this release, users with Teams for Live clients will be able to join and participate in Teams for work meetings right from their initial apps and using their initial identities. It's one more step for improving external collaboration. Now we support not only chats with guests but meetings as well.

  • Automatic targeting based on roles for frontline: Frontline teams can notify the right set of colleagues on channel posts (for example, notifying colleagues in specific role or department).

  • Meeting invite improvements: Meeting invite is the first thing that the user invited to the meeting sees before joining. We are making some design improvements to make sure we have the most important information there and it's better grouped.

  • New admin policy for enabling/disabling tenant users to join externally hosted meetings: As an admin, you can control which meetings your org users can attend, whether they are internally hosted meetings or externally hosted meetings. This can help your org to meet compliance needs and strengthen controls around Teams meetings.

  • Allowing participants to create Collaborative notes before and after meetings: This enhancement to Collaborative notes enables anyone invited to the meeting to create collaborative meeting notes and agendas both before and after the meeting. This means more collaboration, more efficiency, and an even more seamless teamwork experience.

  • Archive channels: Archive channels will now be available for Teams users. As a channel owner or administrator, you can archive a channel you own. By archiving, the channel will not be available to your channel members in their left rail anymore and no more actions will be allowed on the channel like messaging, reacting, commenting, editing, etc. In case, you want, you can unarchive the channel as well, by going to manage teams and then select channels. Team members can host the channel in their left rail even after archival.

  • Microsoft Teams Admin Center: Deploy and manage shifts for your frontline teams: Admins will gain the ability to standardize shifts settings (open shifts, swap shifts requests, offer shifts requests, time off requests and time clock), identify schedule owners, and create scheduling groups uniformly for all frontline teams at the tenant level.

  • Inactive teams and inactive domains report export capability: We will add capability to export the list of inactive teams and inactive domains to a .csv file in the Teams Admin Center.

  • Preset Organizational Backgrounds (Premium): When this feature is enabled, a user will have a preset background defined by the IT admin without the ability to change the background.

  • Microsoft Teams: Share contact information of people in Microsoft Teams chat: Users can now share the contact information of someone who is not in a chat to make it easy for others to confidently get to know other collaborators.

  • Update your organization's privacy statement URL: Admins can customize their privacy statement URL shown to attendees, who are joining virtual appointments. They can update this setting under the Privacy Profile in the Microsoft Admin Center.

  • Specific People Link support for Collaborative Notes: This feature brings improvement to the shareable link type that is created by Collaborative Notes making meetings more effective and secure. The new Collaborative Notes file will generate a Specific People Link (PSL) by default. This link type offers more controlled access than Company Specific Link (CSL). This change also aligns with tenants who have their file-sharing policy set as Specific People. Tenants who previously had Collaborative Notes disabled due to lack of PSL support can now enable and use the feature.

  • Set sensitivity labels for meetings from your phone (iOS): This feature enables you to set the sensitivity label for meetings when scheduling from mobile. Admins can set mandatory and default labels, and this will reflect in their mobile apps as well. Enforcement of the label will also be honored on mobile.

  • Meeting invite improvements: Meeting invite is the first thing that the user who is invited to the meeting sees before joining. Some design improvements are being made to ensure that the most important information is presented and it's better grouped.

  • New admin policy for enabling/disabling tenant users to join externally hosted meetings: As an admin, you can control which meetings your organization users can attend - only internally hosted meetings or externally hosted meetings as well. This can help your organization to meet compliance needs and strengthen controls around Teams meetings.

  • In form meeting options for Teams town halls and webinars: Event organizers for town halls and webinars will no longer be sent to a webpage to edit their event's meeting options. The meeting options will now show up as an inline window within the scheduling form. This happens for both create and edit experiences.

  • Microsoft Teams: UX improvements for Multi-Tenant Organization (MTO) users: This release features user experience improvements when Microsoft Teams users interact with users in another tenant that belong to their organization (e.g., for conglomerates, as a result of M&A). Key changes include removing the possibility of split 1:1 chat threads, richer profile information, removal of the "External" label, and introducing support for an optional admin configurable label.

  • Decorate your background (Premium): This feature lets users create more personal and engaging backgrounds by applying advanced effects.

  • Extended real-time telemetry retention for up to 7 days (Premium): To facilitate better troubleshooting experience for admins in Teams admin center, real-time telemetry that is available during the meeting will be retained for an extended period of time (up to seven days after meeting is ended) for users with Premium licenses. This will help admins identify and fix quality issues using granular telemetry after the meeting is over for up to seven days.

  • Azure protected voicemail on Teams App: Teams users will now have link to their Azure protected voicemails from the Teams App. Users will get notification for the voicemail on their Teams App, and can open the attached link to access the voicemail on the web browser.

  • Audio and video flyout in Teams meetings: This feature enables users to efficiently manage their audio and video settings during meetings. These features are easily accessible, allowing users to control their devices and adjust key audio and video features quickly and effortlessly, without needing to navigate through multiple layers of settings.

  • Enable cameras with IntelliFrame and people recognition experiences on new Teams Experience: IntelliFrame enables multi-stream video, face recognition of in-room participants, active speaker recognition, attributed voice-based transcription, and panoramic video on Front-of-room (180-degree view) and Center-of-room (360-degree view) cameras, taking Teams Rooms on Windows cameras to the next level of intelligence. IntelliFrame is available only with the Microsoft Teams Rooms Pro license. This feature was released to public in August 2023 on existing Teams application, and this update is to announce the availability of IntelliFrame features on new Microsoft Teams Experience.

  • Microsoft Teams: Share contact information of people in Teams chat: Users can now share the contact information of someone, who isn't in a chat to make it easy for others to confidently get to know other collaborators.

  • Operational hierarchy for FL locations: This feature enables admins to define how different locations are organized within their organization. This includes their operational hierarchy (groupings of locations to areas, regions, divisions etc.), defining the departments at every location (if applicable) and adding location metadata (such as type of location). This information will be used to power cross location operations (such as Shifts marketplace), targeted communications, task assignment etc.

  • Remove items from Activity Feed: This feature helps users to remove items from activity feed.

  • Select the domain to use for Teams Email Service: Admins will now have the functionality to select the domain to use to send emails to their users via Teams Email Service.

  • Microsoft Teams: Updated Files app with new OneDrive experience.: Files app that is accessed from left side of Teams desktop client is upgraded to use OneDrive app. This brings all the performance improvements and new features of OneDrive app within Teams while bringing updated visuals to existing functionality. For new Teams Desktop client, Files app will also be renamed to OneDrive app.

  • Microsoft Teams: Surface Hubs on the new platform are managed as Teams Rooms on Windows devices in the Teams Admin Center: With Microsoft Surface Hubs transitioning from a specialized platform to Teams Rooms on Windows, admins can now manage them in the Teams Admin Center as they would manage other Teams Rooms on Windows device. Customers with Teams Rooms Pro license can easily monitory and manage Surface Hub devices in the Teams Rooms Pro Management portal.

  • Microsoft Teams: Domain-specific search: Searching content in Teams is faster and more precise than ever before with this feature. You can easily narrow down your search results by clicking on the domain pills in the first row in the search box. You can also search files or group chats by entering a person name.

  • School Connection in Microsoft Teams: The School Connection app in Microsoft Teams (mobile) empowers parents and guardians to engage, support, and monitor their student's learning at school. As a parent, you can stay up to date on assignments that are upcoming, overdue, or recently completed, assignment feedback, grades, or rubric feedback insights from the past month on digital activity, assignment turn-ins, and reading progress. School Connection would need to be enabled by school IT administrators through a setting in Teams Admin Center, for parents to view their kid's profile. This app in Microsoft Teams is currently in Private Preview, and with this release, this becomes generally available to all regions, except countries in the European Union (EU) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). The release to these countries will be coming soon at a later date. However, if you're a school in any of these countries, you can sign up for our private preview program, in which not all data storage and processing occurs within the EU Data Boundary.   • Teams Phone and Teams Rooms licenses in device store: This feature enables IT admins to discover, try to buy Teams Phone and Teams Rooms licenses from the device store in the Teams admin center.

  • Priority Account Chat Controls (Premium): As part of the Teams Premium package, a new management capability called Priority Account Chat Controls is being introduced. This feature empowers users with decision making control for unwanted internal communications via Policies setting. Users are notified about chats from new contacts, giving them a choice to accept or block the conversations.

  • Suggested Files in 1:1 Chats: As an extension of Suggested Replies in 1:1 chats, you can now easily save time when you need to send a file in a chat by tapping on a Share file suggestion.

  • Custom backgrounds for announcement posts in Channels: Teams users will be able to create engaging custom backgrounds for channel announcements in just a few clicks. Powered by Microsoft Designer, use generative AI to create expressive images.

  • Engagement information in Teams Attendance report: This feature enables organizers to access meeting engagement data in Teams Attendance Report.

  • Virtual Appointment desktop joins route to Teams web: This feature allows schedulers to enable the 'have attendees join from a web browser' setting so that attendees joining the virtual appointment on desktop will be routed to the Teams web browser experience. This allows attendees to have access to engagement features including raise hand and live reactions.

  • Generate unique join links for external presenters so they can easily join events: When organizers set up events and add external presenters, these presenters will receive unique join links automatically. These links allow them to enter events directly so that the organizers don't need to admit them from the event lobby or manually change their event role during the event.

  • Workflows within Channels: Users will be able to configure workflows within their Teams channels.

  • SMS appointment notifications in Virtual Appointment Teams Meeting template in US (Premium): Introducing SMS notifications to improve your guests' appointment experience when scheduling business-to-consumer meetings via the Virtual Appointment Teams Meeting Template. When enabled, external guests will receive SMS text notifications about their appointment that includes appointment details and the meeting join link, so they can join directly from their phone. Text notifications are sent for appointment confirmation, updates, and a 15-minutes reminder before the appointment begins. This feature is only available to US tenants and users with a Teams Premium license.

  • Microsoft Teams: Automatic updates for Teams app on android-based Teams devices: Android-based Teams devices will receive automatic updates of the Teams app without the need for manual intervention. Administrators can manage the automatic updates by organizing devices into update phases or pausing the rollout temporarily, if needed, from Teams admin center.

  • Controlled Content Meeting 1P Template: We're launching a template that is useful for meetings with external participants. The template comes with a preset set of defaults for meeting options. The purpose of these templates is to provide tight control over:

    • lobby bypass
    • who can present
    • allowing chat in lobby/in-meeting
    • who can record in meeting

    To organize a meeting using this 1P template, one needs a T-Pre license.

  • Customization for Watermark (Premium): Teams meeting organizers now have the flexibility to choose between a Single watermark or a repeated watermark. The Single watermark displays the viewer's email on top of the shared content and/or video feed in a clean and unobtrusive manner. When the Single watermark option is enabled via Meeting options, the watermark is enforced for all meeting attendees.

  • Workflows app: Users will be able to manage all their Teams workflows (powered by Power Automate) within the Teams Workflow app. Users will also be able to create new workflows through the Message Extension along with Message Actions.

  • Microsoft Teams: Enabling Cloud IntelliFrame for Teams Rooms in the new Microsoft Teams Experience: Cloud IntelliFrame launched earlier this year is now available in the new Microsoft Teams Experience. Remote users attending a meeting with Teams room enabled with Cloud IntelliFrame will be able to see a zoomed in and segmented view of in-room participants in a grid gallery, making meeting experience more inclusive and immersive for hybrid meetings.

  • Collaborative notes on Teams mobile: This feature allows meeting attendees to cocreate and collaborate on their meeting agenda, notes, and action items. Since Collaborative notes are a Loop component, it's always in sync regardless of how many places they live in. Also, the assigned tasks in Collaborative notes automatically sync with ToDo & Planner.

  • Microsoft Teams: Town halls: Set up and host large scale events across an organization with the familiar Teams app you use for webinars and meetings.   • Microsoft Teams: End to end encryption for one-to-one calls in Teams Rooms on Windows: Teams Rooms on Windows can be configured to encrypt all person-to-person (P2P) calls. The callee must also have the encryption setting turned on. When in an encrypted call, both caller and callee can verify encryption key to ensure that the call is encrypted end to end and secure.

  • Microsoft Teams: Mute/unmute status icon for Teams Rooms on Windows: To ensure users in the room are aware of the mute state of the room, a mute icon is added to the room video on the front-of-room display.

  • Call controls via directly bluetooth connected audio devices: Use device buttons to control a call (answer, end, hold) from Bluetooth audio devices without needing a USB dongle when connected to Windows PC running Teams desktop client. For many headsets and speakerphones, this call-control feature will work without requiring any user action other than pairing the headset with their PC. This feasibility is because the functionality is built upon industry standard HFP protocol which many headsets support currently. In short, if your headset is able to answer or end a cellular call on your mobile, it should work with this feature.
