These release notes provide information about new admin features for Microsoft Teams and Teams Admin Center.

May 25, 2023

• Avatars for Microsoft Teams: Avatars for Microsoft Teams give you that much-needed camera break, while still allowing you to collaborate effectively. You can add a new layer of choice to your meetings and represent yourself the way you want with customizable avatars and reactions.

• Microsoft Teams Zero-touch App Install: Microsoft Teams Zero-touch App Install uses intelligent signals for your users to install and surface the apps that the admin has already allowed for the tenant. An admin can enable it to help users naturally discover and use apps that are highly relevant to their needs within Microsoft Teams.

• Change call queue and auto attendant greetings and announcements by authorized users: With changing environment, Teams users need to make adjustment to their call queue and auto attendant greetings and announcement more frequently than typically IT helpdesk can handle. Hereby, we're introducing the user-managed CQ/AA greetings for Teams end users. Identified by Teams tenant admins, these authorized users can change greetings and announcements for their respective call queues and auto attendant without leaving Teams.

• Microsoft Teams: Track and pause automatic firmware updates for Android-based Teams devices in the Teams Admin Center: Admins can now easily track which firmware is being rolled out and when through the automatic updates via the Teams Admin Center. Additionally, automatic updates can be paused temporarily, allowing time to validate scenarios, etc. This feature is applicable for Teams Rooms on Android and Android-based Teams Phones, Panels, and displays.

• Call health panel for VDI: The Call health view in Teams helps you to identify and troubleshoot issues you might experience during a Teams meeting or call. In this view, you'll get data on your network, audio, screen sharing, and outgoing video quality. These real-time metrics are updated every 15 seconds and are best used to troubleshoot issues that last for at least 15 seconds. To view your stats during a call or meeting, select More actions icon at the top of the call window, and then select Call health near the top of the menu. This feature is now available in VDI for Citrix, VMware, Azure Virtual Desktops and Windows 365. For Citrix, it requires Workspace app 2109 or higher. For VMware Horizon 8, it requires 2106/8.3 Horizon clients (or higher). For Horizon 7, it requires Horizon Client 5.5.4 (Windows only). For AVD/W365, it requires Remote Desktop Client 1.2.2459 or higher for Windows, or 10.7.7 for MAC

• Microsoft Teams: GCC-H support for Teams Panels: Teams Panels already support Government Community Cloud (GCC) tenants and will now meet Government Community Cloud High (GCC-H) account requirements as well.

• Video Closed Captions in PowerPoint Live: Closed Captions are now supported for embedded videos in PowerPoint Live for Teams. If the video contains out-of-band closed captions, all viewers will automatically have the option to turn on closed captions for the video.

• Allowing Rich call controls during an outage with SBA: Enables users to access the following call controls with Survivable Branch Appliance (SBA) in the event of network outage:

  • Dial by name
  • Contact search/calling
  • Dial from call history
  • Peer to peer calling

• Magnify slide in PowerPoint Live: Allows presenters to magnify the slide for all meeting attendees and allows the meeting participants to magnify the slide privately.

• Parent Teacher Meeting: Enables teachers to schedule virtual meetings with parents/guardians of students through Teams.

• Room Remote on Desktop: The Room Remote feature enables touchless meetings by allowing users to control a nearby shared meeting room device from their desktop/PC with Teams client. This feature was first launched on mobile and will now be available on your desktop device form factor.

• View chat bubbles during a meeting on Teams Rooms on Android devices: With the addition of chat bubbles, participants in a Teams Rooms on Android can now see what the participants are chatting about, on the front of the room display.

• Microsoft Teams: Microsoft Teams Rooms on Android - New touch and collaboration experiences: New touch and collaboration experiences will include (a) 4K display support to further enhance your meeting experience on large-screen devices and (b) the ability to control the room system from both the front of Room touch display and the touch console for convenience; to get this experience, the Enable touch controls setting on the device must be enabled. You'll also be able to quickly start collaborating outside of a Teams meeting with the new, one-touch Whiteboard icon on the home screen. Tapping on this icon will launch the Microsoft Whiteboard app locally, and it will also allow you to start an ad-hoc meeting with your local whiteboard, enabling you to seamlessly switch from local to online collaboration. The Allow initiate Whiteboard setting on the device must be enabled to get this experience. When you join from a Teams Rooms device, you’ll start to see incoming chat messages to increase meeting inclusiveness. As a remote meeting participant, you’ll be able to add the PTZ Camera Controls app and control the zoom and orientation of a Teams Rooms camera directly from your desktop during a meeting; to get this experience, the Far end camera control policy must be enabled on the resource accounts.

• Microsoft Teams: Start Whiteboard from Teams meeting from Teams rooms on Windows: Teams room users can now share a Whiteboard in a Teams meeting by using share content user interface. With hybrid work, whiteboarding is a key feature to enable collaboration between in-room and remote users. When Whiteboard is started from the room, it's attributed to the meeting organizer so that they can manage access to the artifact.

• Hardware Occupancy Sensor Integration: With a supported hardware occupancy sensor, users can see via a banner if the room is occupied when it's available and if the room isn't occupied when it's reserved. The user will also be auto checked-in when the sensor detects occupancy if check-in has been enabled.

• Additional Filters in Approvals app: Within the Approvals app, there'll be additional filters for you to filter your approval list on, for example, filtering on approval status or keyword in the title.

• Schedule message delivery in chats: Users can now schedule when a chat message will be delivered to the recipient.

• Browser screen pop for incoming PSTN calls: Administrators can enable this policy so that on acceptance of a PSTN call, an automatic browser launch can happen alongside Teams, displaying relevant information such as CRM data and case data to the user.

• Teams: External Access Group Chat Invitation Flow: When users are invited to a group chat by an unknown, unmanaged Teams user, they'll be prompted with options to (1) acknowledge the invitation, or (2) leave the group chat. The users can continue to use existing block and unblock functionality to manage their external communications.

• Modern meeting experience on the web: The modern meeting and calling experience is available for Teams on the web in Chrome and Edge browsers - including improved pre-join, dynamic view, and the updated control bar.

• Users can create e-signature approvals containing signature fields within Teams: Users can now create e-signature approvals and include multiple signature fields to the e-sign providers website, without bringing the fields outside Teams .

• Transcription for calls on Microsoft Teams for Android: You can now start a transcription for both your 1:1 and group calls.

• Rich Call History: Rich Call History.

• Music on hold for call transfer: This feature ensures that music can be played to the caller on hold when a call transfer is initiated.

October 13, 2022

• Viewing the Full Chat conversation thread after clicking on search message results: When users search for a chat message in Teams and select a message result, they're taken to a view that contains only the selected message, rather than the entire chat thread. This fix will now land the users on the full chat thread once the message search result is selected, thereby providing full context of the conversation around the message result.

• Integrated CART Captioning in Meetings on Web: Users will now be able to view captions coming from a CART provider (real-time captioning) within the Microsoft Teams meeting on Chrome and Edge. Meeting organizers and participants will be able to ask their captioning providers to stream captions to Microsoft Teams.

• Microsoft Teams chat embedded within Dynamics 365: Microsoft Teams chat can now be accessed directly from Dynamics 365, allowing users to continue existing chats, or create new individual or group chats.

• Ability for Teams Admins to manage Teams 3P App subscriptions from within Teams Admin Center: Ability for the administrators to view and manage in a single place all third-party app subscriptions they’ve purchased from Teams Admin Center; easily adding more licenses for the purchased subscriptions; cancel, upgrade and downgrade subscriptions and access invoices.

• Native Apple Silicon Support - Universal Binary Teams Version: Teams now comes as a Universal Binary Mac so it runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon based Mac devices.

• Suggested Replies in Group Chat: Suggested Replies are now available in group chats, allowing you to select a quick response when you are mentioned in a group chat or when you are having a 1:1 conversation within a group chat.

• Deploy Teams at Scale for Frontline workers: Your organization may have a lot of teams that you use to drive communication and collaboration among your frontline workforce, who are spread across different stores, locations, and roles. Currently, there isn't an easy solution to deploy, set up, and manage these teams and users at scale. We're building a solution to enable admins to deploy and manage teams at scale.

• Pre-assign Channel members to Breakout Rooms: Ability for an organizer to pre-assign participants in Channel meetings, explicitly for channel members who are not invited to the meeting.

• Transcription will be turned on together with Recording if the "Record automatically" meeting option is on: If the meeting organizer has set the "Record automatically" meeting option to on for a meeting, Transcription will be turned on together with Recording when the meeting starts, if transcription is allowed by administrators. This feature will make recording playback experience accessible.

• Teams: External Access Invite Flow for Managed Organizations: When receiving new external 1:1 chats, users will now have the option to accept the chat or block the external user. This feature also provides the ability to Block external users at any point, which revokes access to present and incoming messages.

• Intelligent translation in Teams Mobile: Teams iOS will now prompt you to translate messages that aren't in your set language.

• Microsoft Teams: Join Teams meeting by meeting ID and passcode from Teams rooms on Windows: Users can use Teams room on Windows to join Teams meetings, using meeting ID and passcode. This feature significantly improves meeting-join experience for meetings across tenants or where room is not invited to the meeting.

• Intelligent translation in Teams Mobile: Teams Android will now prompt you to translate messages that aren't in your language.

• View attendance report on Microsoft Teams for Android: You can now check the attendance information for regular meetings or webinars and also the registration information before webinars on Microsoft Teams for Android.

• View meeting transcripts on Microsoft Teams for Android and iOS: You can now start transcription for your meetings, and view the meeting transcripts after the meetings on Microsoft Teams for iOS.

• Microsoft Teams: Direct guest join for Zoom and WebEx Meetings on Teams Certified Android Devices: Direct guest join (aka Third-party meeting join) is an ability to join meetings of other meeting providers from Microsoft Teams. Third-party meetings will appear on the Teams calendar and users will be able to join them the same way they join any other Teams meeting. This functionality will be limited to video-enabled Teams-certified Android devices and will support only Zoom and Webex meetings.

• E-signature approval requests can now be created in Teams Approvals on any mobile device: Users will now be able to create e-signature requests in Teams approvals on any mobile device.

• Microsoft Teams: Share content experience improvement on Teams rooms on Windows: Teams Rooms on Windows is updating the user interface to share HDMI and content camera in the meeting. The new experience provides a better task-completion experience and clarity for in-room users, ensuring that the users can easily share content in the meeting.

• Microsoft Teams: End to end encryption for one-to-one calls in Teams Rooms on Windows: Teams Rooms on Windows can be configured to encrypt all person-to-person (P2P) calls. The callee must also have the encryption setting turned on. When in an encrypted call, both caller and callee can verify encryption key to ensure that the call is encrypted end to end and secure.

• Microsoft Teams: Mute/unmute status icon for Teams Rooms on Windows: To ensure users in the room are aware of the mute state of the room, a mute icon is added to the room video on the front-of-room display.

• Call controls via directly bluetooth connected audio devices: Use device buttons to control a call (answer, end, hold) from Bluetooth audio devices without needing a USB dongle when connected to Windows PC running Teams desktop client. For many headsets and speakerphones, this call-control feature will work without requiring any user action other than pairing the headset with their PC. This feasibility is because the functionality is built upon industry standard HFP protocol which many headsets support currently. In short, if your headset is able to answer or end a cellular call on your mobile, it should work with this feature. • Brightspace (D2L) LMS integration with M365.: Microsoft has now partnered with Brightspace (D2L) LMS to deliver more seamless integrated learning experiences. Microsoft Teams Meeting LTI and Classes LTI apps are now available within Brightspace. Teams Classes LTI enables Educators to create a Team for their Brightspace course using the roster information of the course. • Open LMS integration with M365: Microsoft has now partnered with Open LMS to deliver more seamless integrated learning experiences. Microsoft Teams Meeting LTI and Classes LTI apps are now available within Open LMS. Teams Classes LTI enables Educators to create a Team for their Open LMS course using the roster information of the course. Teams Meeting LTI empowers educators and students to access, schedule, and manage Teams Meetings within the Brightspace LMS. Learn more

• Disable chat write access for anonymous or unauthenticated users: IT admins can now disable chat write access at the policy level for non-federated users and unauthenticated users who join Teams meetings through a link that must be used in conjunction with disabled meeting chat policy to provide additional security against data exfiltration.

• Microsoft Teams: Microsoft Teams Connect shared channels: Workplace collaboration has become increasingly digital and cloud based. In our interconnected world, we need to collaborate with people beyond our own organization—communicating with partners, following up with suppliers, and reaching out to customers. Through Microsoft Teams, you can securely collaborate with external stakeholders. With Teams Connect, we are making it easier to collaborate with those inside and outside your organization, helping your extended team work effectively and efficiently across organization boundaries. With shared channels, multiple organizations can work together in a shared space. Have conversations, schedule a meeting, share, and co-author files, and collaborate on apps, without ever switching tenants.

• Dynamic caller ID for call queue agents: Call queue agents can now place calls from the Calls app using a call queue phone number as their caller ID. This ensures the call is properly identified by the recipient and that the call back number is the call queue number rather than the agent's personal line.

• Moodle LMS integration with Microsoft Teams: In addition to integration with Canvas and Blackboard, Microsoft has now partnered with Moodle LMS to deliver seamless integrated learning experiences. • Multi-language meeting invite control for IT admin: IT administrators can apply a new Teams meeting policy to set multiple languages in Teams meeting invites. The control of up to 2 languages can be applied to users, groups or the entire organization.

• Policy propagation - Enhanced activity log: Admins can see group policy assignments in the activity log along with other policy operations. The activity log has enhanced details regarding a policy operation to give admins more visibility.

• Microsoft Teams: Career Coach - Student engagement insights: Faculty and staff license holders will now be able to view aggregated student engagement insights in Career Coach. These insights will include the number of engaged students, engaged student sessions, resume uploads, and transcript uploads from within Career Coach.

• Console home update for Cortana icon, bringing back Share (aka Present) button on Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows: Teams Rooms on Windows is bringing the Present button back to console home screen and renaming it to “Share” to have alignment between the out-of-meeting and in-meeting share experience. The Cortana push-to-talk button is moved to the bottom of the home screen, allowing customers to continue using Cortana without having to change their workflow for presenting HDMI content from a Teams Rooms device out of the meeting. The Cortana design change is applicable if the Cortana voice assistance policy is enabled for Teams Rooms.

• Support of Transcription for Teams for Citrix on Virtual Desktop Infrastructure: Users on virtual machines can use transcription once the feature is available. After a meeting, the transcript file is automatically saved in the chat tab for that meeting.

• Music on Hold for Voice over IP Calls.: This feature ensures that music can be played when a Voice over IP call is placed on hold.

• Support of Transcription for Teams for Azure Virtual Desktop on Virtual Desktop Infrastructure: Users on Virtual machines can use transcription once the feature is available. After a meeting, the transcript file is automatically saved in the chat tab for that meeting.

• Web Browser Join: Join Virtual Appointments from your web browser on any device.

• Room capacity warning (based on Teams Room on Android people counting supported cameras): When Teams panels is deployed in a room with Teams Rooms that support people counting, Teams panels can display a warning message when the room is at or over capacity to inform people in the hallway that the room is full. Teams Rooms on Android will display a warning message on the front of room display when the room is over capacity.

• Export a Teams list from the Teams admin center: Administrators can export a Teams list as a CSV file from the Teams admin center.

• Chat filter for non-meeting chats: There will be a new chat filter within the Chat app which filters out meeting chats and chats with bots. It filters in one on one and group chats with people.

• Search in Teams Admin Center: Admins can search for users, teams, pages, and settings using a common search box in the Teams admin center.

• Roaming bandwidth control: A new roaming policy to provide specific settings from other policies which need to be rendered dynamically based upon the location of the Teams client. Initially two settings from the TeamsMeetingPolicy will be included: AllowIPVideo and MediaBitRateKb.

• Calendar Show As in meetings: Using Show As, organizers can set free-busy statuses for a meeting and schedule OOF meetings from Teams. Along with this, private meeting functionality is also enabled which allows users to hide meeting details from other users when their calendar is shared.

• Mandatory Comments for Approvals App in Teams: Teams Admins and Approval Template creators can enable mandatory comments for when an approver responds to a request.

• Apps in channel meetings: Ability for EDU users to use apps like Forms and Sli.do to improve engagement.

• Dynamic Emergency Calling for Work From Home for VDI - Citrix: This feature enables users on Virtual Machine to validate the address that will be communicated to emergency responders in the event that an emergency call is placed by an individual working from home.

• Auto-answer with video for iOS devices: This feature brings the ability for iOS devices to automatically answer incoming meeting nudges with or without their video on. The feature availability to the end user is controlled through AutoAnswerwithVideo Powershell policy.

• Dynamic Emergency Calling for Work From Home for VDI on Azure Virtual Desktop: This feature enables users on Azure Virtual Desktop on VDI to make an emergency call while working from home. It will allow users to validate (and if necessary, edit) the address that will be communicated to emergency responders.

• Teams admin center: Joined teams per user: Teams administrators can view the list of teams that a user has joined.

• Admins can pin apps in messaging extensions: With app setup policies in Teams admin center, admins can now pin apps with messaging extensions in Teams compose experience. Learn more

• Pin your own video in Teams meetings: Currently, users can pin video feeds to increase the size of the desired video on their own screen. Now, we have expanded the ability for users to pin their own video on the stage as well. This way, users can also see their own video in the increased size on their screen.

• Local time available added to people profile: You can now know the local time of the people you collaborate with.

• Microsoft Teams: Career Coach - Job market trends: Faculty and staff license holders will now be able to view location-based job market trends within Career Coach. This experience is powered by LinkedIn workforce hiring data.

• Information tip added to new features in Bookings: When a new feature is added to Bookings like SMS and mobile browser join, users will be informed on what these features mean.

• New feature notification in appointment view: When a new feature like SMS or WebRTC is added to Bookings, users will see a "new" pill by the toggle in the appointment.

• Tags are available in DOD: Tags in Teams let users quickly reach a group of people without having to @mention or type out everyone. For more information on tag in teams, see Using tags in Teams.

• Microsoft Teams for Education: Career Coach - edX learning content: Career Coach will now feature edX content within the learning experience.

• Admin notifications for Custom app submissions: When a developer submits a custom app for IT admin approval, admins will receive a notification in a dedicated Teams channel, so they can review and take next steps to publish the app. Learn more

• Mute notifications during meetings: The feature will allow the user to mute notifications during meetings thereby helping focus during meetings. A user can choose to mute notifications from the global notifications settings for all meetings and uBar for a per meeting basis.

• Expiration of Teams meeting recordings: For Teams meeting recordings saved to OneDrive & SharePoint you'll now be able to define a default number of days to keep recordings before they are automatically deleted. Users will be notified of upcoming expiration dates of their recordings and be able to override the expiration date per recording file.

• Pin your own video in Teams meetings: Currently, users can pin video feeds to increase the size of the desired video on their own screen. Now, we have expanded the ability for users to pin their own video on the stage as well. This way, users can also see their own video in the increased size on their screen.

• Cortana iconography change on Teams Rooms devices in Front of Room display and console.: For Front of Room display and console UI, there will be a new icon for Cortana to help distinguish its capability for push-to-talk (PTT). The iconography is updated to reflect Cortana's avatar.

• Cortana voice activation is enabled by default in OOBE for newly imaged Teams Rooms devices: We are making some changes to OOBE (out of the box experience) for Teams Rooms! Cortana Voice Activation will be enabled by default, but if desired, IT admins can decide to opt out at that moment by switching the toggle off.

• Cortana now supports en- languages (en-au, en-ca, en-gb, en-in): We’ve expanded Cortana support to devices that are set to different locale language. The locale supported today are: en-us, en-ca, en-au, en-in, en-gb (US, Canada, Australia, India, Great Britain).

• Microsoft Teams for Education: Career Coach - Admin feature enabling: IT admin will have controls in Teams Admin Center for enabling new Career Coach features for their school.

• Additional information on app detail page: The app detail page will provide greater description for each app, including images and product videos.

• App lists and banners in the app management page: The Manage Apps page today allows admins to manage apps in the tenant. Lists of apps and editorial banners aid the admin to find relevant apps for the tenant.

• Simultaneous sharing of video and screen content through the Teams web client: Users can share screen content and video simultaneously during calls or meetings through the Teams web client.

• Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows: Switch between multiple video cameras: Ability for a Teams Room to switch between multiple video cameras in a meeting space.

• Microsoft Teams: Meet now support for Teams Rooms on Windows: Teams Rooms on Windows are making an alignment for Meet now experience to Teams desktop replacing New meeting control on the Teams room console with Meet (aka Meet now). With Meet, users can start an ad-hoc meeting with a single tap and invite participants to it. This change is only applicable if the Teams rooms is running in Microsoft Teams only or Microsoft Teams (default) and Skype for Business modes. With this change, all P2P calling and group calling functionality is moved under calling application.

• Microsoft Teams: Calling app update for Teams Rooms on Windows: Teams Rooms on Windows are making an alignment for calling experience to Teams desktop replacing Dial pad control on the Teams room console with Call. Calling app provides users functionality to dial PSTN calls where available as well as enable entry point for P2P Teams calls, group Teams calls and P2P federated user calls. This change is only applicable if the Teams rooms is running in Microsoft Teams only or Microsoft Teams (default) and Skype for Business modes. With this change, all P2P calling and group calling functionality that was previously under New meeting button is moved under Call. For customers that use SIP URI calling through Skype for Business, Enter SIP URI entry point is available in Microsoft Teams (default) and Skype for Business mode.

• Teams admin center: Sensitivity label support: Teams administrators can assign sensitivity labels when creating Teams.

• Video Streams Out via AJA or Blackmagic Design Hardware: Isolated video streams can be sent out of Teams meetings via AJA and Blackmagic Design hardware devices.

• Parent App: Teachers can reach out to their students' parents and guardians using chat in Teams.

• Introducing background effects on web: When you use Teams on the web, you can either blur your background or replace it entirely with the images provided in your video meeting or call. Note: Blurring or replacing your background might not prevent sensitive information from being visible to other people in the call or meeting. Learn more

• End-to-end encryption option for Teams 1:1 VoIP calls (Android and iOS): Microsoft Teams will support an option to use end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for ad hoc 1:1 Teams VoIP calls, providing an additional option for conducting sensitive online conversations. To support customer security and compliance requirements, IT will have full control of who can use E2EE in the organization. E2EE for Teams 1:1 VoIP calls will be available to commercial customers in preview in the first half of this calendar year, expanding support for online meetings later. Learn more

• Federation and external access with user in Teams outside of IT managed organizations: This feature extends the Teams Connect offerings to also allow users in an IT managed organization to start 1:1 and group chats with users outside of an IT managed organization (TFL). There is no support for meetings, TFL users starting chats, or calls in this release. This feature will only be supported for EDU tenants initially.

• Chat with Teams users with accounts that are not managed by an org: Chat with Teams extends collaboration support by enabling Teams users to chat with team members outside their work network with a Teams personal account. Customers can invite any Teams user to chat using an email address or phone number and remain within the security and compliance policies of their organization.

• Microsoft Teams Career Coach – Improved IT onboarding: Teams Admin Center settings for Career Coach will be updated to improve the provisioning and configuration process, as well as add more descriptive field validation and error messaging. The settings update will also introduce controls for managing the release of Career Coach features to app users.

• Simultaneous sharing of video and screen content through the Teams web client: Users can share screen content and video simultaneously during calls or meetings through the Teams web client.

Now IT admins will be able to review resource-specific consent (RSC) permissions for the apps within Teams admin center. • Cortana voice skills in Teams: Cortana voice skills in Teams mobile app help users perform meeting, communication, and collaboration tasks simply using spoken natural language. Users can speak to Cortana by clicking on the microphone button in Teams app and make requests like “Call Megan” or “Send a message to my next meeting” if they need to connect with someone while juggling household chores or walking the dog or generally on the go. Users can join meetings simply by saying “Join my next meeting” or check their calendar by asking “what do I have this morning”. Once in a meeting or a call, they can invoke Cortana from the overflow menu in the meeting stage and perform typical in-meeting tasks like adding people by name or number (“Add Megan to the call”), deck presentation (“present the quarterly review deck”) or navigating slides (“Go to the appendix slide”). Other things that the feature supports are finding and sharing files, search, and navigating within the Teams app (“Open my chat with John, Go to my unread activity, Go to my mentions etc.). Cortana in Teams meets the same enterprise-level privacy, security, and compliance promises for Cortana enterprise services, as reflected in the Online Services Terms (OST). Learn more.
