    Dear @Sasangka Sekhar Deka,

I understand this is urgent, and I’d like to ask a few quick questions to better narrow down the issue:‌

    • Are you unable to open Word at all, or can you open it but cannot edit the document?
    • Is this issue happening with one specific file, or does it happen with all Word documents, including a new blank document?
    • Did this start after any recent change, such as a Windows update, Office update, or signing out of your account?
    • Are you signed in to Word? You can check by going to File > Account and confirming if your account is connected and activated.
    • If the document was downloaded or received from someone else, do you see a yellow “Enable Editing” button at the top?
    • If possible, please provide a screenshot to help me diagnose the issue more effectively.

If Microsoft Word appears “blocked” or won’t let you edit your document, it is usually caused by one of a few common situations such as the document opening in Protected View, the file being read-only, or an issue with your Office activation or installation. Therefore, here are some options I recommend you try:

    Step 1:

First, open your document and check if there is a yellow bar at the top that says, “Enable Editing.” If you see this, simply click it to unlock the document. For reference: What is Protected View?

    Step 2:

If that option is not available, please open Word and go to File > Account and confirm whether your Office product is activated. If possible, please provide a screenshot to help me diagnose the issue more effectively.

Check if it shows “Unlicensed” or prompts you to sign in, please sign in again with your Microsoft account, as this can block editing features.

    Step 3:

You can also try opening a blank document in Word. If a new document works normally, the issue may be with the specific file (for example, it could be protected or marked as read-only).

In that case, right-click the file > select Properties, and make sure Read-only is not checked > If there is an Unblock button, click it as well.

    Step 4:

If a Microsoft 365 application such as Word or Excel isn't working correctly, sometimes restarting it will fix the problem. If that doesn't work, you can try repairing it. When you're done, you might need to restart your computer. For more information and instruction, please refer to this article: Repair an Office application

There are two common reasons for Word documents or workbooks to appear “blocked” in Microsoft 365 for business:

    1. The file type is blocked or too old
Organization or Word settings can block older or certain file types from opening. To recover and unblock an older/blocked Word file on Windows:
      1. Open Word.
      2. Select File > Open.
      3. Select the blocked document once.
      4. Open the dropdown next to Open, choose Recover Text, then select Open.
        • If a warning appears, select OK.
        • Some formatting may be lost.
      5. Go to File > Save As.
      6. In Save as type (or File Format), choose Word Document (.docx) and save.
If the file still will not open, upload it to OneDrive and let Office convert it:
      1. In a browser, sign in to OneDrive.
      2. Select Upload and choose the blocked file.
      3. After upload, select the file; wait for the “file is being converted” message to complete.
      4. Select File > Save as > Download a copy and save the new copy to the PC.
    2. The file or feature is blocked by organization policy
In a business environment, administrators can block certain file types, features, or actions for security and compliance. When that happens, Word shows a message and prevents opening or editing. In that case:
      1. This is not an error in the document; it is a policy decision.
      2. Contact the internal IT help desk, support portal, or manager and provide the exact message shown in Word (for example, that the file type is blocked or a feature is restricted).
      3. Ask whether the policy can be adjusted or if an alternative way to work with the file is provided.

If the file opens but is “locked” and cannot be edited because another user has it open from a shared location, only the last saved version can be viewed until the other user closes it. To keep working immediately, use File > Save As to create a new copy, edit that copy, and later reconcile changes.

If Word itself will not open and shows an error like “Word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly,” run an Online Repair of Office:

    1. Close all Office apps.
    2. Open Start > Settings > System > Apps > Installed apps.
    3. Find Microsoft Office, select Modify.
    4. Choose Online Repair, then Repair.
