Double billing

“I purchased Microsoft 365 Business Standard. I am being billed monthly, but I cannot access the business account. My Outlook email is only the billing contact, and I do not know the tenant login. I need the tenant located and access restored, I need to learn what is stored in the Business Standard cloud before removing one of my subscriptions.

I also require a refund for the chaos and confusion. I never wanted two accounts. I was forced to give my credit card in order for my computer to reboot. The same email address, yet 2 charges.

GIVE ME ACCESS TO THE THING I AM PAYING FOR.

Why this wording matters

This tells them:

  • It’s a tenant recovery issue
  • Not a password/reset issue
  • You need business backend access, not personal support

Without those words, they’ll keep sending you in circles.

What they will do

Once you reach the correct team, they can:

  • Find your tenant using billing info
  • Reset the admin login
  • OR cancel/refund the subscription

They are literally the only ones who can see that hidden account

  • You’re locked out because the business account is a different identity than your Outlook login
  • Your files may be in that account, but you can’t access them without recovery
  • The fix is not technical — it’s account recovery via business support
  • Reassurance (important)

You did not mess this up.

This situation happens when:

  • Business account setup isn’t completed properly
    • Personal account login overrides it
      • And Microsoft splits the identity behind the scenes
It’s confusing even for IT people.

    Dear @Amy Shagena,

I am so incredibly sorry for the chaos, confusion, and deep frustration this has caused you.

As a member of this community support forum, I don't have direct access to Microsoft’s backend billing systems or your private account data I wish I did so I could fix this for you right this second. However, I know exactly how this system works, and I want to give you the precise words to use so you don't get sent in circles anymore. Your files are safe in that business cloud, but because this is a security lockout, it requires a specific corporate team to unlock it.
If you don't see the tenant login page, you can go back to your purchase email, where you'll find a link to log in to the tenant account.

Here is the exact, immediate path to get your access restored and your money back:

Because you cannot log in as an administrator, you cannot open a support ticket online. You must call Microsoft Business Support directly.

Find the official phone number for your region here: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

Here are some tips and an example of a prompt to help you navigate the IVR more effectively:

(When you call the support number, you may hear an introduction of about 30 seconds such as "you can visit the link...". You can ignore this introduction and wait until you are presented with the options. Then press "1" as a business email user, and again "1" for technical help.)

In some regions, the initial interaction may be automated, so here’s a general idea of how the conversation might go to help you prepare:

What kind of problem are you experiencing?

    Answer: Account issue

    What products do you use?

    Answer: Office 365 for business

Is this for an education or company account?

    Answer: For companies

    Are you an administrator?

    Answer: Yes

Are there any other administrators in your organization?

Answer: No. I am the only admin in my tenant

Do you need a... Service request?

Answer: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me direct to the Data Protection Teams.

During the phone call, you will need to provide the information associated with your subscription, such as your company name, billing details, phone number, and an alternate email address, etc. This information allows the Data Protection team to verify your identity and securely assist you in regaining access to your administrator account.

If calling phone support hasn’t been effective and you’re getting disconnected, there is another option you can consider as a workaround to reach the right team. You can sign up for a new Microsoft 365 tenant by creating a trial subscription here: Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing | Microsoft 365

Once that new tenant is created, you’ll be able to access the Microsoft 365 admin center and submit a support ticket directly from there. In the ticket, explain that you’re requesting assistance from the Data Protection Team for your original tenant, due to being locked out as the only admin with MFA issues. This method often helps bypass the automated loops because you’re able to submit the request from an authenticated admin center, even if it’s under a temporary tenant.

Note: Please remember to cancel the trial subscription once your issue is resolved to avoid any unintended charges.

Also, just to set expectations clearly and transparently, this is a user‑to‑user support forum, so I don’t have the ability to intervene directly or unlock accounts. I can only suggest additional options based on my experience and what has worked for others in the community.

I hope this information helps you take the right steps to regain access to your account. If you have any updates or additional details, please feel free to leave a comment under this post. I’ll be happy to assist further within my scope.

Your directions to contact support are useless.

This scenario involves two separate issues: recovering access to the Microsoft 365 Business tenant and resolving double billing/refund. Both require direct interaction with Microsoft support because only they can see tenant mappings, billing details, and process refunds.

    Steps to take:

    1. Identify that this is a business/tenant issue
      • When contacting Microsoft, clearly state:
        • The subscription is Microsoft 365 Business Standard.
        • This is a tenant recovery / business account access issue.
        • The Outlook email in use is only the billing contact, not the tenant sign-in.
      • This ensures routing to Microsoft 365 business support, not consumer/personal support.
    2. Contact Microsoft 365 business support as an admin
      • For business products like Microsoft 365 Business Standard, support is available through the Microsoft 365 admin center for admins. Since admin access is lost, use phone/web support instead.
      • Use the Microsoft 365 business support entry points listed here:
      • If the subscription was purchased via a partner or reseller, contact that partner or account manager to open a support ticket on the tenant.
    3. What to explicitly request from support Provide the following wording and details:
      • State that this is a Microsoft 365 Business Standard tenant recovery issue.
      • Explain:
        • There are two charges on the same email address.
        • The email address is the billing contact only.
        • The actual tenant login / admin account is unknown.
      • Ask them to:
        1. Locate the Microsoft 365 Business tenant using billing information (credit card, invoice IDs, subscription IDs, billing account).
        2. Verify identity as the payer and owner (they may ask for invoices, last 4 digits of card, organization details, etc.).
        3. Either:
          • Restore or reset global admin access to the tenant, or
          • Confirm the tenant and subscriptions so they can be cancelled if no access is required.
    4. If this is the only admin on the tenant
      • If there is only one administrator and that account is inaccessible, Microsoft’s Data Protection team must be involved to verify identity and restore access.
      • Use the Microsoft customer service phone numbers and clearly answer that:
        • The product is Office 365/Microsoft 365 for business.
        • The issue is admin locked out / tenant recovery, not a simple password reset.
      • The Data Protection team has specific tools and processes to verify identity and regain access to administrator accounts.
    5. Handling double billing and refund
      • For double charges or two subscriptions on the same or different accounts:
      • If self-service flows do not resolve it, contact Microsoft billing support directly via:
      • Explain clearly that:
        • There are two active Microsoft 365 subscriptions tied to the same billing email.
        • Only one tenant is needed.
        • Request:
          • Identification of all subscriptions tied to the card/email.
          • Cancellation of the unwanted subscription.
          • A refund for the duplicate or unintended subscription period, as applicable under Microsoft’s refund policies.
    6. Clarifying account types when speaking with support
      • Emphasize that:
        • The Microsoft 365 Business Standard subscription is a business product associated with a work or school account, not the personal Outlook.com account.
        • The Outlook email is used as a billing contact and Microsoft account, but the business tenant identity is separate.
      • This aligns with how Microsoft distinguishes:
        • Microsoft 365 for business (work/school accounts, tenants, admin center).
        • Microsoft account (personal account used for consumer subscriptions and billing).
    7. If support cannot find the tenant from the personal account
      • Ask them to search by:
        • Full name on the subscription.
        • Last 4 digits of the credit card and billing address.
        • Any invoice numbers or order numbers from billing emails.
      • Once the tenant is found, request:
        • Confirmation of the tenant name (e.g., contoso.onmicrosoft.com).
        • Reset of the global admin sign-in or guidance on regaining admin access.
    8. Preventing future confusion
      • After access is restored and duplicate subscriptions are cancelled:
        • Use the Microsoft account dashboard to review personal subscriptions and billing: Microsoft account dashboard.
        • In the Microsoft 365 admin center (once accessible), review all subscriptions and billing accounts as described in Understand your Microsoft business billing account to ensure only the intended Business Standard subscription remains active.
