I have a subscription to Microsoft 365 Family for $129.99/year and also, I see a subscription for Premium membership for $4.99/monthly. What is this Premium Membership for?

Why am I being charged $4.99/month?

Thanks, James H Hall

The $129.99/year Microsoft 365 Family subscription and the $4.99/month Premium membership are separate charges.

From the context, the $4.99/month “Premium” charge is consistent with an additional Microsoft 365/Outlook.com-related subscription that provides extra benefits beyond the standard free services, such as:

    • Premium features in Outlook.com for Microsoft 365 subscribers (for example, ad‑free Outlook.com experience and advanced email/security benefits when associated with an Outlook.com address like @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com).
    • Or another lower‑tier Microsoft 365/OneDrive/Basic-type subscription that adds storage and email benefits on top of the main Microsoft 365 Family subscription.

Because multiple subscriptions can be attached to different Microsoft accounts or purchased through different channels (e.g., retailer vs. Microsoft), the most likely reasons for the extra $4.99/month are:

    1. A second, separate Microsoft 365/Outlook/OneDrive-type subscription on the same or another Microsoft account.
    2. A subscription purchased via a third party (such as a retailer or app store) in addition to the direct Microsoft 365 Family subscription.

To confirm exactly what the $4.99 Premium membership is and why it is being billed:

    1. Go to the Services & subscriptions page for the Microsoft account used for Microsoft 365 Family and review all active subscriptions and their prices.
    2. If the charge is from a different account or retailer, follow the guidance in How to investigate a billing charge from Microsoft and How to get a refund on a Microsoft subscription to identify and, if eligible, cancel or request a refund.
    3. If another party (such as a retailer like Amazon) is billing the subscription, contact that retailer to cancel and request a refund, as shown in the similar case where Amazon cancelled and refunded a duplicate Microsoft 365 Family subscription.

If the subscription cannot be identified or cancelled online, contact Microsoft Billing Support (via the Contact Support flow) so an agent can review the billing details and clarify what the $4.99 Premium membership covers and whether it can be cancelled or refunded.
