**Issue**: The unread filter in Outlook is not removing emails from the unread view unless they are manually marked as read. This happens even though the emails appear as read using my reading pane rules to mark them as read when moving to the next email.

**Details**:
- I am using the legacy version of Outlook, not the new one.
- using the new outlook produces the same results

**Steps Taken**:
- Checked reading pane settings.
- Created a new profile.
- Cleared views
- going in and out of the folder does not change the outcome

**Question**: How can I resolve this issue so that emails are automatically removed from the unread view when they are marked as read by the reading pane rules?

If its the new desktop Outlook fx:

    Microsoft Outlook Version: 1.2025.219.400 (Production)

    Klientversion: 20250214004.19

    WebView2-version: 133.0.3065.82

Then its Settings -> Mail -> Message Handling
    section**: Mark as Read**
Uncheck: **In the Filtered messages *** always keep messages as unread, unless I explicitly mark them as read

    Hi @Michelle Koci

    Welcome to our forum!

What is your version of Outlook desktop client?

Does this happen often? Or the case with only a few emails?

    Try the following possible solution:

Select File > Options > Advanced. Under Outlook panes, select Reading Pane. You can change how quickly messages are marked as read or change how and when messages are marked as read, then see if the changes take effect.
