Currently, there is an AutoSave feature, which requires you to be a Microsoft 365 Apps subscriber and store Office files in the cloud such as OneDrive.
Regarding your suggestion to allocate cloud storage to Word and Excel, I suggest you raise a request in the Microsoft feedback forum: https://feedbackportal.microsoft.com/feedback/
Microsoft will listen to all feedback and consider them for additional feature/future versions of Microsoft products. Your feedback helps Microsoft developers know which features are most important to you.
