Local weather report – it’s cloudy in Boston, and that’s a good thing!

Boston is known for a lot of things. From its historical significance as one of the oldest cities in the United States and its importance during the American Revolution with the Boston Massacre and Boston Tea Party, to today’s die hard Red Sox Nation and culture of culinary delights including New England clam chowder and Boston cream pies, people know us. Now, Bostonians can claim one more reason why our city stands out – it’s quickly embracing what’s positioned as the new medium for business computing – the cloud.

In October 2010, 7th Sense Research conducted an online survey, funded by Microsoft Corp., which measured opinions and attitudes of SMB and enterprise IT decision makers (ITDMs) in markets across the country, including Boston. The survey polled participants to gauge their opinions on the business value of cloud computing, while also identifying key factors and benefits that encourage adoption of cloud-based services.

Survey results indicate that bigger businesses embrace and use cloud computing solutions more than SMBs. As a market of focus, Boston was no exception – it was ranked the most “cloud friendly” among enterprise-size companies with nearly three quarters respondents investing in cloud services.

Enterprise ITDMs in Boston recognize the cloud as a technology revolution and an engine for innovation, according to the survey. Furthermore, Boston ITDMs claim low costs as the biggest reason to consider a move to the cloud.

If you’re considering cloud services, but don’t know where to start, you’re not alone. Forty percent of Boston respondents said they would be more likely to purchase a cloud solution if they could work with a certified vendor.

Fortunately, there are many vendors fully qualified to help businesses invest in the cloud.
