This is how 2008 begins, not with a bang but a whimper...

So... the picture below is what the New Years Shindig at the Space Needle is supposed to look like.

Except, this year, it was not to be.

Right after the inspirational interview with the fireworks engineers, the entire city of Seattle counted down with gleeful expectation

..3..2..1.. HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!

And...

Nothing. About 6 seconds of fireworks, followed by about 6 minutes of uncomfortable TV News anchors trying to fill the dead air as the fireworks failed again and again to go off.  Eventually, long after the music ceased, we were treated to about 4 minutes of completely random and uncoordinated firings that looked more like anti-aircraft tracers than a planned extravaganza.

Good Times.
