User Name wrong in external Office365 / Sharepoint enviroments

Hi there,

we have a user that changed it's name but the mail address stayed the same. To get the name change done, we kept the old user and changed the name information. In our own office 365 Environment everything is fine. But when this user is invited to work on documents our customers share over SharePoint / Office 365 the old name is still shown. How can we fix this?

When I checked "Azure Active Directory -> Sign-in logs" I can see the old name, but only for the applications "Microsoft Office" and "Office 365 SharePoint Online". When I klick on one of the entries "Basic Info" I still see the old name. When clicking on the user I get redirected to the user information and there the new name is shown. It seems some kind of syncing between different data bases is not working.

I guess renaming users is not too uncommon (weddings, trans-people, ...) - is there an easy solution?

Thank you!

    Hi @Phillip Senger (

is this user being synced from an on-premises Active Directory or is this a cloud-only identity?

Did you only change the users display name and not their UPN (or sign-in name)?

The blog post here explains the process of changing the UPN for the user:

    Hi @Phillip Senger ( ,

As Michael mentioned, as a gust user under another tenant, even changing the display name under your tenant will not sync the information of this user under another tenant.
I just tested it in my environment, checking the information of the renamed gust user in the AAD of another tenant, it is not updated and shows the same information as when the user was added by another tenant administrator.
So only the administrator of another tenant makes manual changes to its display name.
