I have tried every - every - recommended help from Microsoft to finish setup of the Authenticator app. I have created a "Personal Account" in the app by using my Microsoft account email. Then every time I click on that account email I get a numeric password code and I have no idea what to do with it. I need to use the Authenticator app QR code reader to set up the Your Phone Companion sync with my Windows PC. So, how do I finish setting up the Microsoft Authenticator app with the mysterious password code? It would be most excellent if I could actually use the Authenticator app.

H-o-l-y cow. Those instructions worked. For what it's worth, here is the problem I had, which relates to Microsoft's not-thorough instructions. The instructions kept saying "open the app." On my Galaxy s10e there are no "apps" in the literal sense. They are built in to the Android OS now. If I want to "open" or disable the app, I have to go into Android Settings, then to Apps, then scroll down to the icon for the so-called Your Phone Companion app and click on that, which takes you to the internal Android settings for the app.
Then, what I didn't pick up on (silly me) and what the instruction page you sent me to, is that there is a line "Linked computers." When I did that, everything went according to Hoyle.
The problem here is that Microsoft keeps saying "open the app," but they don't provide the details on what opening the app means when it is "built-in" in the Android OS, and then instruct (as in the page you recommende) the user to link a computer. I don't think I am a d-a in all of this. It is the case, as with other tech giants, that help files and pages (if they can be found) are non-intuitive.
In cases like this with half-baked help files, I always wonder if the developers actually use their own product. I am sure they do, but when they write the help files, they don't, but should, do it in consultation with a non-tech person who would certainly point out the lack of thoroughness.
