SharePoint 2013: Search has encountered a problem using query builder

Issue 

You write search query from query builder in edit result source page. Later you test it and get an error stating "Search has encountered a problem that prevents results from being returned". 

 

Possible cause and steps to rectify the issue 

  • Check if there is any issue with a refinable managed property 
  • Go to refinement webpart and check if any of the properties shows an error when you click on it.

  • If it does show an error as above, check if it is consistent. If yes, then toggle the managed property refinable setting, example from Active to No. Click on OK for the managed property and again toggle it back from No to Active, click on OK.
